Marianna Beaty began her working career at the age of 17 as an employee at the Identification Bureau of the FBI in Washington, DC. Moving back to Memphis after several years, she worked at a Tractor Company as a billing clerk. At the suggestion of her church member she decided to apply to work for the Diocese of Memphis and was hired…..that was 39 years ago.
She has wonderful memories of working with so many Religious, Priests & Lay people at the Jefferson location. She started her position at the Diocesan Office as THE Typing Pool. Later, she assisted Bishop Dozier’s secretary with much of his work, especially letters. She became secretary to then Fr. Peter Sartain who was Director of Vocations. After Fr. Sartain was named Chancellor, they both moved downstairs to the Office of the Bishop. She worked for Fr. Sartain 7 years. Fr. Sartain was named Archbishop of Little Rock shortly after that. She continued working in the Office of the Bishop under the leadership of Bishop Daniel Buechlein. After he was named Archbishop of Indianapolis, the Diocesan Office moved to the Shelby Oaks location in which Bishop J. Terry Steib became the new Bishop. After several years, she was asked by Bishop Steib, if she would consider being his Executive Assistant. She said yes and assisted him for 18 years---until his retirement. “Sometimes I wondered how I did all that I did.” “Then I realized that God had my back all the time.”
She is now Executive Assistant to Kelley Henderson, the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of West Tennessee. With no retirement in sight right now, she looks forward to continuing her journey.
She is a proud mother of 2 children-- a daughter (Chitra) and Son (Dharam). She has 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson. When not at work, she enjoys traveling, cooking & fishing/deep sea fishing.
