Building a dream

Everyone has dreams for their life. Sometimes, circumstances change those dreams, and they take a different shape. For Yozabra Harris, that dream has taken the shape of a house – her own house.

At Catholic Charities, we work with clients to help them identify their dreams and the obstacles that are standing in the way through our Driving the Dream program.

When she was growing up in California, Yozabra’s dream was to work in the entertainment industry. “Sing, dance, act. I didn’t care as long as it was in entertainment.”

But a diagnosed disability and a failed relationship left Yozabra, 37, with financial complications and thousands of dollars in debt. When she came to Catholic Charities to use the food pantry, she learned about the Driving the Dream program. Today, Yozabra’s dream is to pay down her debt in order to qualify for a Habitat for Humanity home and to help build that home for herself and her four sons, two of whom also have a diagnosed disability.

“That is my prayer every morning,” Yozabra said. With the support of Driving the Dream, Yozabra is removing the obstacles to her dream of qualifying for a Habitat home, and she looks forward to the day when she can walk through the front door of a home that she helped to build.

“That would feel so outstanding and awesome,” she said. “That would be a part of my journey that got completed. I really want that for my boys, to show them that you can do whatever you put your mind to.”
